Why This One Is Different

How much concrete do you actually need to fill an ICF wall? Insulated concrete forms turn the wall itself into the pour's permanent form, which changes what "volume" means here: instead of length times width times a horizontal slab thickness, you're filling wall length times wall height times the hollow core thickness between the foam panels, typically 4, 6, or 8 inches depending on the ICF block you bought. This calculator does that math for you. The arithmetic underneath is identical to a flat slab's, just standing on its side, so the same ordering allowance for spillage and consolidation still applies. Confirm your core thickness against the manufacturer's spec sheet before you order, since ICF brands aren't standardized on one core width.

Do ICF walls need more concrete allowance than a flat slab?

Often slightly more in practice. Pumping concrete into a narrow cavity around foam webs and reinforcing steel makes full consolidation harder than a flat, open slab pour, so contractors commonly order toward the higher end of the standard allowance band.
