Why Concrete Calculators Disagree (and Which Number to Trust)

Run the same 10 × 10 ft, 4-inch slab through five popular concrete calculators and you will get answers ranging from about 68 to 84 sixty-pound bags. None of them is broken. They are silently disagreeing about three assumptions, and once you know the three, you can audit any calculator in half a minute.
1. The Waste Allowance (0%, 5%, or 10%?)
The plan-geometry volume of that slab is 33.3 ft³, or 1.23 yd³. But the concrete industry’s own guidance, NRMCA’s CIP 8 (Discrepancies in Yield), recommends ordering 4-10% more than plan volume: forms deflect outward, subgrade is never laser-flat, some concrete stays in the mixer and wheelbarrow, and entrained air settles out. Calculators that print “1.23 yd³” are giving you the plan number; calculators that print “1.35” folded in an allowance without telling you which one. Neither is wrong, but only one of them told you what it did.
2. The Bag Yield (0.45 or "Half a Cubic Foot"?)
A 60 lb bag of concrete mix yields approximately 0.45 ft³. That’s QUIKRETE’s technical data sheet, and the word approximately is theirs: yield moves with how much water you add. Calculators that lazily round to 0.5 ft³ undercount your order by 10% before you have even mixed a bag. At 33.3 ft³ of slab, the difference between 0.45 and 0.5 is the difference between 75 bags and 67, and a second trip to the store mid-pour.
3. The Thickness You Typed vs. the Thickness You'll Dig
CIP 8 has a line worth memorizing: on a 4-inch slab, a mere 1/8-inch variation in average thickness changes the volume by 3%. Nobody excavates to ±1/8″. If your subgrade wanders between 4″ and 4.5″, the true volume is up to 12% over plan: the entire disagreement between the most conservative and most generous calculators, explained by dirt.
The 30-Second Audit
Ask three questions of any concrete calculator: Does it state its waste allowance (and cite one)? Does it state its bag yield (and match the bag’s TDS)? Does it output a range or a false-precision point? A calculator that answers all three is doing arithmetic you can check.
