Why This One Is Different

A basement wall's stud spacing is exactly the same arithmetic as a wall upstairs, yet the quote for framing one almost never matches the wall above it. This calculator sizes your 2×4×8 stud and plate quantities the same way any framing takeoff does, then models labor as a published carpenter wage carried through burden and markup to a charged rate, documented at /methodology/. The difference shows up in site conditions, not the takeoff: working around a poured slab, low headroom near ductwork, and a bottom plate that typically has to be pressure-treated where it contacts concrete. None of that changes the exact spacing arithmetic, but it does change how fast a crew moves, which is a labor-band question rather than a material-quantity one.

Where the Numbers Come From

  • The wage figure you'll see quoted isn't what a carpenter actually costs to employ: the published BLS wage for carpenters is straight-time gross pay only, with overtime, bonuses, and benefits excluded by design, so it's the starting figure in a burden chain, not a billed rate.
